Sadly for Huong, a little girl who comes from an extended farming family, having a new school bag is something of a luxury that children who live in the country can only dream of. All she has ever known is using secondhand things, (school supplies, clothing, even shoes), from an older sister or a cousin.
Huong’s parents do farming to make ends meet for the extended family. Her elderly grandparents live with them in their small house. The grandfather is very frail and blind, while the grandmother is just back from the hospital after having surgery on her appendix.
However, there is good news for Huong. She received a school pack with a lot of school supplies for her new school year! Thanks to sponsors, who care deeply for their sponsored child, this valuable gift was sent to Huong. You can not imagine how happy Huong was when she saw her gift - she couldn’t stop smiling! And as she opened the school bag, she said this was the same type of bag as her classmate's, but nicer. She also was very happy to get a calculator for her 9th grade math class. Huong is an excellent student; and is in a top class at the school. She really deserves to have such a nice present as this. Her mother is very proud of Huong. While I was there, the mother shared with me that Thom, Huong’s younger sister, would be a little sad at also not receiving a gift too. I didn’t know what say, so, I give the mother a small sum of money to buy something nice for Thom.
One thing I do know: I just wish I had the money to buy a good desk for Huong and Thom where they could each study and do their lessons. When I was at their house, I saw a very old wooden desk that is too small for the girls; yet, both of them must use it to do their homework. This is hard to do because they both have homework to do every night.
Here is the letter from Huong that was translated into English to say thanks to her sponsors, Linzi and Megan.
October 2, 2010
Dear Linzi and Megan,
I am very happy to write a letter to you. First, I would like to wish you and your family good health. I have received your letter and I know that you are my sponsors.
Thank you very much for your generous gift to me! I have received stationery for school, a nice school bag, colored pencils, pens & pencil, notebooks, and a calculator!
I would like to tell you a little about my family. There are 6 people in my family: my grandparents, my father, my mother, my younger sister and I. My sister is a student in the 4th grade. My grandparents live with us and are very old, and weak, they can not work any more. My father is 50 years old and my mother is 49 years old but they have to work very hard. At their age, if they are in other family, their children would be older and they can work and help parents a lot, but my family is not lucky like that.
I am a student in the 9th grade but I am told that I’m very small for my age. I am very sad and I wish to grow up soon so I can help my parents more. I feel sorry for my parents and I love them so I will study hard. I love school and friends that give me a lot of knowledge. I like learning English in order to communicate with foreigners in the future when they travel to Vietnam. The photos of you and Ms. Megan are very beautiful. Megan is very pretty and she is growing well.
Finally, I do not know how to say this but, I am very happy to be your friend! Thank you very much for your kind help to my family. I wish you health, happiness and for Megan, I wish that she learns well in school and that your dream to become an English teacher comes true.
I hope we will exchange our letters and now I would like to stop here. Good bye!
Yours truly,
Huong
