Hang
is a little girl, who was born in 2008in Soc Son district, about 60 kilometers
from Hanoi. Unfortunately, when she was only 11 months old and just beginning
to crawl on all fours, a thermos of scalding hot water spilled on her, resulting
in 2nd degree burns. Her family took her to the National Institute
of Burns and the Saint Paul hospital in Hanoi, for treatment. The medical
insurance for children under the age of 6 helped to pay for a large portion of
the hospital bill and medical expenses. However, her parents had to pay for
additional medical treatments and follow-up care for little Hang amounting to VND 20,000,000 (approximately $1,000 US) for the operation.
Hang
is a very sweet little girl who is very nimble and smart for her age. She is
just starting kindergarten and likes singing very much. Hang is just at a
sensitive age whereher scars make her feel embarrassed and insecure. Whenever
someone asks her to see the scars, she becomes sad and refuses.
The parents
are a young and hardworking couple. Theyrenta small parcel ofland from the
local authority and set up a small bazaar selling confections, fruits and so
on. They started the business in 2009 at the time Hang had the burn. Up to now
they still could not pay the rent for the land back to the local authority. To
run a business means you need a lot of money to invest in the business.
Hang’s
father, (as a first son in the family, following Vietnamese cultural tradition),
has big responsibilities for his family’s business. He has to take care of a
younger sister’s tuition and living expensesfor an older sister who is a
handicapped victim of Agent Orange. In addition to these expenses, Hang’s
parents also have to make ends meet raising their two children. The children
often get sick leading to extra expense for medicine and the hospital. When the
children get sick and have to be taken to the hospital means the parents cannot
always open the shop during the day to do business.
Hang
needs at least 5 more operations to remove the scars and heal the deep burn
wounds so that she can have a normal childhood and grow to be a confident,
self-assured young girl.
We higly appreciate the help form individuals and
