Two children are really in need of scholarships and rice distribution sponsorships

On August 4 2009, after the rice distribution event for the poor families in Soc Son District, Ha Noi city, Lien and I visited some of these families in our rice distribution and scholarship programme. It was a very sunny and humid day. The local People Committee staff facilitated our visit. We went into the hilly countryside straight into the vicinity where the poor people resided. The zig-zac mountain road was rocky and undulating. It was very hard to get to the homes of the poor families.

We reviewed the family that lived right near the mountain. Their only prized possession was the dilapidated house with a few simple household appliances. Their only source of income is from their rice crops and is often insufficient to pay for their daily expenses and school fees for the children. Their house is in very poor conditions and it is very dark.

Despite the challenging circumstances, the two children still try their best to study well. The first child, Nhung is now studying in Grade 11 and is an excellent student. The second child, Cuong is now studying in grade 7 and is also a hardworking student. Both of these children hope to study well and would earn a good job in the future to help the difficulties of the family end.

Their parents’ meagre salary does not allow them to afford a proper studying desk for the children. Their uncle made a makeshift table from small pieces of wood. The table was not in the best of condition and the two children have to share the desk when they study. Often they had to use a very old chair from their tea table.

Their father suffers from mental sickness and his medical condition does not allow him to work to earn a living. As such, the responsibility of supporting the family lies solely on the poor mother. Nhung feels very sorry for her mother and she helps the mother in the farming and the simple things around the house to ease her burden. Thankfully, HSCV rendered support to help their needy family in 2007 and has been giving them financial support and scholarships to Nhung and Cuong since. The family is elated and the grateful mother said, “Thank you very much for the great help. With HSCV’s help, my two children can continue going to the school and would have a chance to have a brighter future!”

Current, HSCV’s fund for the Rice Distribution program is limited so they are still in the waiting list of the Rice Distribution Program. In order to continue our support with the scholarship programme or provide them with monthly rice programme, we would like to appeal to all to help. Any form of assistance and support would be greatly appreciated.
