HSCV’s Life-Changing Surgery Program is running well this time. During summer vacation, children from many different areas are brought to the National Hospital of Pediatrics by their family to help cure their various problems. We at HSCV are very happy that many of these children, who come from difficult circumstances, are able to do so because of our support. As an example, the following is the case of a child who comes from a suburb of
One might think that Thao is an unlucky child, ever since her father passed away when she was just 4 years old. With two other children in the family, Thao's mother has had to work very hard by herself to provide her two children with food and money for school. In addition, Thao has two deformed legs ever since birth. Both legs are curved, especially the right one, which is also weak, making it difficult to move her feet. She can not do daily activities by herself, unless she receives help from her mother or sister. Despite this handicap, Thao loves going to school very much. She is currently in Grade 3 and she is a good student! Everyday, she goes to school with the help of her mother or sister.
Her mother feels sorry for her handicapped daughter. This is a difficult situation for the mother, who has to try to collect money from savings and by borrowing from her relatives in the hopes of curing Thao's legs. In June of 2009, the family brought Thao to the
After having the first surgery for the right leg, the doctor at the hospital advised that she should have one more surgery for the second leg, which should help Thao to move better. However, the mother felt troubled about having a second surgery. Although she wanted to do the best thing for her daughter, she could not raise enough money for the second surgery. So she refused the doctor's advice for this second operation, until such time that she could bring her daughter back later when she could afford the cost of the second surgery. Seeing the difficult situation of the family, the doctors at the hospital felt sorry for Thao’s situation and they introduced the family to HSCV for help.
With the support from HSCV in the Life-Changing Surgery program, Thao receives sponsoring that pay for her hospital fees, medicine, and living expenses. With this help, the family can concentrate on Thao's second surgery.
Both surgeries on Thao's legs went well! Her legs were put in a cast to correct the shape of her legs. Because she is a young child, it was especially painful at night. But when HSCV staff visited her, she always had a lovely smile and a happy face for her visitors. With just the smile on her face, we could feel the deep gratitude from this little girl. Thao stayed in the hospital one week after the second surgery and she received great care everyday from the nurses.
One month later, the family brought Thao back to the hospital for a check-up. Her condition is much better now. However, she still needs to have more orthopedic treatments to help strengthen her legs. Thao still receives support from HSCV for these hospital treatment costs. The Life-Changing program will continue following her treatment process to make sure her condition improves. With the help of the Life-Changing program, the family feels very lucky and they would send many thanks to HSCV and all the sponsors that have helped Thao to walk again. They also hope and pray that HSCV would also be able to help even more disabled children to have a bright future as well!
