Yesterday we introduced Tu and Nga Nguyen, a family determined
to get ahead. For this family, the rice sponsorship has already resonated
throughout their lives, allowing them to focus on saving to cover their son
Vinh’s medical bills. However, for other families, the potential of a rice
sponsorship merely provides respite from desperate situations, as in the case
of our next family.
Hai Nguyen is a single mother, caregiver, farmer, and sole
provider for her family of three. Her husband died three years ago, leaving her
to feed and protect two mentally disabled children. Her family has no
possessions and her only income is the small profit made from the annual crop.
With the odds already stacked against her, Hai struggles in the field,
suffering from malnutrition, back and stomach pains. While her family is poor
enough to qualify for a government-sponsored medical assistance, the basic care
is not enough to assist her children, let alone address her own problems.
Hai’s hope lies with her youngest son, Ninh who studies in
Grade 10. If he is able to complete his schooling, Ninh will immediately become
a more viable job candidate, with the possibility of him being able to support
his mother and siblings in the future. Here, the effect of the rice sponsorship
is most clearly demonstrated. The extra funds that Hai saves from this
assistance will increase the odds that Ninh can stay in school rather than drop
out to labor in the fields and provide immediate assistance for his family.
We all know what it is like to have such overwhelming odds
stacked against us. Hai’s unwavering dedication to her family’s survival
despite enormous mental and physical pain represents the best in human
spirit. At HSCV, we are striving to
offer the basic assistance that helps to ensure Hai’s future. This Give to the
Max Day, we are asking you to consider what it like to receive such small and
yet significant help. Contribute to our Rice Sponsorship and help shape lives
today.
