The day was sunny when we returned to Vinh Quynh commune in Thanh Tri district to visit the families in our family assistance program. We visited the family of Pham Xuan Tuan the neighborhood, a family who left a strong impression on us during our last trip.
The house was not much different, except with the addition of a new altar. Tuan’s family also salvaged some remaining paints of their relatives and gave the front wall of the house a fresh new coat.
There are only two people in the family, the mother and the son in a small house. Tuan’s father passed away a couple years ago and life has been very hard on the family. The mother worked very hard to take care of her only child. She used to work as a vegetable picker to earn money to feed her son. However, her back problem has caused chronic pain and made her much weak. Tuan also suffered inflammation of the pancreas and was brought to the Hospital for medical check-up and observation for seven days last year. His mother had to borrow money from relatives and neighbors for his medical treatment. The family’s financial condition suffered yet another blow.
Today, Tuan is a student in Grade 12 of the Thanh Tri Education Centre and will be graduating from the high school this summer. “I’ve just applied for the examinations to Economic and Industrial University and the Economic and Industrial College. I hope to have chance to study so that I can have a good job in the future”, Tuan said.
Despite his medical condition and trying circumstances, Tuan is studying hard for the upcoming examinations. He is determined to reach his goal.
We hope that with the provision of rice and educational scholarship, it will help relieve the financial burden on the family, and help steer him towards a better future.
HSCV is committed to supporting Tuan in his post high school aspirations. To learn how you can help Tuan reach his goals visit our website at http://www.hscv.org/scholarships_post_high_school.htm
